Peace vigils and cohousing

It is another wonder of cohousing to share these very important moments together. Last night we had an extra fancy dinner prepared by one of our gourmet nonresident members. Delicious and thoroughly enjoyed - we hated to jump up to go to the candlelight vigil, but it was important. It felt so good to see almost the entire community make their way down to our town plaza in Sebastopol to hold candles for peace. We sang songs and smiled at our neighbors - I'm sure many silent prayers were going on inside. A local Rabbi friend leaned over and said "It all seems so hopeless. tomorrow we may all be here mourning...." and I said, "yes, but it at least feels good to all be here together offering support and solidarity - to be among like minded souls." and he said "Yes...." A plane flew over at one point and we all held our candles high for a possible photo - a beautiful sight.

Then we made our way back to the Common House for a champagne celebration of one of our couple's first grandchild being born yesterday - new life to counter-balance fear and destruction.

I felt proud of our community for their common values for peace and so many other values we share.

Note: I hear there were more than 100 vigils in the SF Bay Area alone.

Here near Middle Musquodoboit in Nova Scotia our village of 500 people is
holding a vigil. The concern is universal, it appears.

It was announced yesterday at our local "No war on Iraq" demonstration t=
hat there were multiple sites in Cincinnati where one could go to partici= pate in the vigil tonight. It was such a beautiful day here (69 degress a= nd sunny) after a long, cold, snowy winter, that we were lounging on the = deck until dark. I walked into the house and clicked on my email. The l= istserve had four messages so I started to read them only to be reminded = that the vigil started at 7:00. We rushed to the site at Hamilton and Ot= te and found over 200 people lining the street with candles and signs. T= his was such a moving experience for me because this site is just 3 block= s from a parcel of land that may one day become the Cincinnati Ecovillage= =2E We are working with the city to get the rights to develop a 7 acre p= arcel which was once cleared for a freeway. The community stopped the bu= ilding of the freeway and now the state will turn the land back to the ci= ty. Without the list serve, we wouldn't have made it to the vigil. I am = so glad that I didn't miss this opportunity to participate as one of the =
over 6000 sites in 169 countries. (http://www.globalvigil.org)
Please post pictures from all the cohousers and the cohousing communitie=
s that participated.=20

We decided to hold a vigil on our front lawn here at
Cambridge Cohousing (MA) and had about 50 people attend, including several people from the neighborhood whom we met for the first time this evening. Most of our children, 2 through 17 years old, participated. For the most part, it was a silent vigil, very moving, which ended with some singing and then moved into the Common House for hot cocoa, cider, popcorn and cookies. Lots of photos were taken but I'm still waiting to see the best ones and
will forward to the list, if appropriate.

Yesterday about 15 of us stood on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge from 10am till 12n as part of the Stand for Peace which stretched from Lexington to Dorchester (about 15 miles). We got so much positive response from people driving by.
In peace,

I felt the same excitement last night at the candle vigil lin Nevada Citi= y, Ca. I'm sure the crowd of 200 was proportionately larger than what = big ciites manage. We lined the street and moved our candles in waves, = getting support from most of the traffic passing. Friends called earlier= from Vancouver, Canada and Round Valley (Mendocino County) to say "we"ll=
be lighting when you are". Such a united caring must matter!
