--------------------  FORWARDED MESSAGE FOLLOWS --------------------

"Call for Articles" for our Fall '03 issue, "Right Livelihood,"

    1. We're seeking to borrow photos of people working, either alone or in
small groups. The photos can vertical and horizontal, black & white or
color. We return the photos after the issue is published.

    * If they're prints, please mail them to Communities magazine, 52 Willow
Street, Marion, NC 28752.

    * If they're digital, there are two kinds we can use.
        (1) 300-360 dpi at 5x7 or 8x12 are high enough resolution that we
can use them for lead photos for articles, or for the cover.

     (2) Low-resolution photos can be used but only as quite small photos on
the page.

    We prefer hard-copy prints and snapshots!

    2. We're seeking articles that touch on one or more of the following
issues. (Or, other issues related to right livelihood that you think of!)
    * What does it mean to be employed in a way that benefits others, does
no harm to people or the earth, and earns a decent living wage? (Is that
even possible?)
    * What does it mean to start a new business in community?
    * Entrepreneurs in community
    * Community-owned businesses
    * Worker-owned co-ops in community

    3. We're also seeking articles on what it means for a community to
thrive.

        * What are the factors that make a community not just survive, but
thrive? Are the following some of the factors, in your experience?
        A community culture of good process and communication?
        Economic stability? Everyone has jobs or a source of income?
        The community is multi-generational? Families and extended families
live there?
        The presence of children?
        The community regularly sings and plays music together?
        Regularly scheduled work parties?
        Other factors?

  The deadline for receiving articles for the Fall issue is JULY 7th,
however if you'd like to write an article, please let me know as soon as you
can and I'll send you our Writers Guidelines.

    Thanks very much.
