At Cambridge Cohousing, we try to eliminate those sponges by using old
washcloths, torn-up towels or dishcloths which get put into the washing
machine and dryer, or in the hamper, hopefully after each meal. Hard as
some of us try, those sponges keep appearing. The consultant from the
County Extension Service, who did a presentation on Food Safety, told us to
get rid of the sponges (washing the sponges in the dishwasher, which some
people do at home, was insufficient because of the nooks and crannies).
Perhaps we should try to culture out some bugs from used sponges...maybe
then we could impress some folks.
