We put a considerable amount of our long-term reserves in some high-grade tax-free municipal bonds and tax free bond mutual funds. Quite safe, much better than CD returns (though that might not still be true for a bond purchased now, interest rates have dropped so much). Also, considering that between state and federal taxes the rate on investment income for the HOA is around 40%, that seemed like a good idea.
