I myself see the term "like-minded" simply literally. With the emphasis on what is shared, not any exclusion. If used by bigots, it would mean sharing those beliefs, but if used by liberals, it would mean sharing something very different. Depends whose commonality is referenced. And I do see distinct advantages in living in community with people who have in common with me a value on community, cooperation, environmental responsibility, open-mindedness, peace and social justice, conscious child rearing, sustainable local economy, organic food. It is empowering, it allows us to accomplish certain things which are not possible when I'm in a group where my values on this sort of thing are a distinct minority. Who would help me figure out a greywater system, or pitch in to do the work of the community with me? There is still a lot of diversity within my largely white/college-educated/liberal community. And I learn from it all the time. I also spend plenty of time interacting with those with different beliefs, or cultures, and I learn from that too. I don't want to live in a protective bubble of commonality, but to use some of that solidarity to leverage change and good stuff happening. Which I see as my responsibility, as a person born with a lot of privilege in this society.
