Here in Pleasant Hill I guess we really have a spa, as it's tiled and built
in next to our pool. So, I don't know if these answers will help you Raines,
but here they are.

The spa is conrete with tiles around the edge. It fits 6 adults comfortably
and at its max we once had 16 people in it (a lot were kids). in the summer
it gets used almost everyday as the little kids like to get in after the
pool. In the winter it gets used 3-5 times per week, mostly by adults during
the week and families on the weekend.

We heat it with gas, and keep it at about 85 degrees when not in use. We
have a removable insulated cover for it which keeps the heat in very well.
It is on the same gas line as our common house, so I don't think we know the
cost of the gas used exactly. The chemicals it needs are 1-2 bottles every
other day in the summer, and far fewer in the winter. it takes little time
to do the chemicals 15-30 min per day, but it needs to be drained and
cleaned about every 2-3 months, so that takes time. We have one person who
does only that for his community work and we call him "Neptune".

Those of us who use it (90% of the community) are VERY happy we have it. It
is particularly nice if you have a sore back or a hard day at work, and it
works wonderfully to calm cranky children prior to bed. It also acts as a
mini-swimming pool for those a little too young to go in the big pool. They
like the freedom of not having to be held all the time.

Both pool and hot tub area is locked at all times. No child under 16 may use
them without adult supervision.

We haven't yet resolved the clothing optional issue, so other than the kids,
everyone wears a suit.
