Our acoustical consultant, Acentech out of Cambridge, MA, has always
recommended "Nubby" by Armstrong as the best acoustical bang for the buck.
It comes in 4x8 and 4x10 sheets. It is 1" thick fiberglass covered in a
bumpy fabric. We glue it to the ceiling and then install 1x wood battens in
4x4 grid over the top. "Nubby" panels perform even better when installed
with an air space behind them, but we have never been able to afford that
type of labor.

Subject: [C-L]_ sound proofing materials

My community has asked me to make an inquiry on our behalf about
low/non-toxic soundproofing materials. Our Common House has a sound
problem. Other cohousing communities have recommended using a material
called tectum some time ago. It tectum the product of choice? Has it
effectively addressed the sound and environmental health issues? Is there
another, better product that could do this?

Thanks!
