SIDNEY JOURARD, in his THE TRANSPARENT SELF, wrote something tthat has long 
stayed with me
-----to the effect:
Shall we reveal who we are or shall we remain enigmas, being seen as not the 
persons we really are.

In my experience this self-revealing is an art, guided by, on one hand (at 
least for me) never lying and, on the other, being judicious about what I do 
share. A prinicple here is assessing whether or not my sharing will serve me 
and/or the other. Perhaps a corollary principle for me would be "Be where 
I'm at."
