As for meal times, on weekdays we serve dinner at 7pm but Sunday dinners are at 6pm, partly because we have our HOA monthly meeting about half the time on Sundays after dinner and it is nice not to have it go too late. It's perfectly clear that you aren't expected to clean up if it is not your day to cook, but sometimes you want to hang out and chat with the cooks of the day who are cleaning up so you clean up with them. Or you may arrive for dinner a few minutes early and rather than stand around being hungry it's more fun to help set up/ serve. The Kitchen/dinning area is a very social place, and some of us enjoy playing with food. Also we all put our own dishes in the dishwasher so there is a certain amount of milling around in the kitchen after dinner which is conducive to pitching in to wipe off the odd counter or two.
