Cost is the main reason I'm not going for a common space. In the Bay Area, setting aside one of the units of a smaller multiunit building drives the cost beyond what the small families (sometimes single moms, a family style that NEEDS the sort of social support I'm aiming for) can't afford it, and we end up with the "Dentists Collectives" that were one of the original Danish criticisms of Co-Housing.
We haven't bought or identified a particular building yet, but I'm shooting for less than 6 units, again, to reduce the "Overhead" of trying to swing a bigger deal.

Actually, to me this sounds a lot like a variation on retrofit or infill co-housing. I am curious though as to why you can't have one unit set aside as the common space (common kitchen, meeting space, workshops, shared laundry perhaps, etc.). How many units does the residence have? Is the building you are interested in like an apartment complex, or more like a multi-family house?Light, Life, Love, Liberty, and Laughter! No Common House, no developement, as little organizational overhead as possible, but shared goals, shared childcare, shared meals in ourown spaces. ------------------------------ _________________________________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list -- Unsubscribe, archives and other info at: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L/ End of Cohousing-L Digest, Vol 11, Issue 34 *******************************************
