We are right on the Maryland/Washington DC border, 4 blocks from the METRO
Rail station and live in a multifamily 4-story U-shaped former abandoned
office building that has been gutted and turned into 56 condo units. We
formed up
around December 2002, and after working with the developer (Don Tucker of
EcoHousing in Bethesda, MD) for over two years, the bulk of us moved into our
building in November 2004.

Our Mission Statement:

Eastern Village Cohousing is an intentional urban community committed to
inclusive decision-making through consensus and the following principles:
• we cherish and support diverse ages, ethnicities, interests, abilities,
relationships and spiritual beliefs
• we value ecological responsibility, sustainable design and a balance of
aesthetics and affordability
• we foster interconnectedness, growth, care, communication and respect
among our membership
• we engage responsibly with our neighborhood and the wider world
Our website is _www.easternvillage.org_ (http://www.easternvillage.org) .
We earned a U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) Silver award for having a "green" design that
incorporates a
geothermal heat pump for heating and cooling, very energy-efficient
construction, a 96% efficient gas water heating system (with plans to add solar
 water
heating in the summer of 2007), passive solar shading of many of our windows
and all Energy Star lighting and appliances. We have internet access and
satellite TV through the community.

Ann Zabaldo, who lives in our neighboring Takoma Village Cohousing community
in Takoma Park, Maryland was our lliason to the developer and we consider
her our godmother. Many cohousers nationwide know Ann well.
