You are invited to the NEW ENGLAND COHOUSING GATHERING on September 14-16. This will take place mostly at Cambridge Cohousing. You may have already heard about this event: here are some additional details (apologies for any inconvenience if you get this message from multiple sources). We welcome to the gathering everyone who currently lives in a cohousing community, or is a member of a group in formation, or of a community further along in its development. We are also inviting others interested in cohousing. Our main goal is to enable people involved or interested in cohousing to share concerns and information, and to network with each other. There will be discussions all day on Saturday Sept. 15 at Cambridge Cohousing, with both large- and small-group sessions. The sessions will go from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and be followed by a reception. Members of the board of the Cohousing Association of the US will be present, and there will be opportunities to meet them. Child care will be available on Saturday. At the sessions on Saturday, topics will include: · Consensus decision-making and meeting facilitation; · Getting the work done; · Economic and racial diversity, including affordability; · Environmental sustainability; · Building community (meals, events, rituals, etc.); · Management/fiscal issues (e.g. insurance, using common space for private events, whether to hire a management company); · Inter-generational relationships, involving families and children, and aging in place; · Dealing with controversial issues (pets, alcohol, etc.). On Friday evening September 14, there will be a social get-together at Cornerstone Cohousing, also in Cambridge MA—further details will be announced later. In the morning of Sunday September 16, there will be a brunch at a Boston-area cohousing community (details to be announced). During the Sunday afternoon there will be "open houses" at Cambridge and New View (Acton MA) cohousing communities, plus hopefully other local communities. The registration fee is $30, which covers lunch and snacks on Saturday. To register, go to http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-workshops.aspx If this link doesn't work, go to www.cohousing.org then to "Tours and Events" then to "Workshops and Seminars." We urge people to register as soon as possible, and not later than September 1. We will have to limit the number of participants to 50. If more than that number register, we will put people on a waiting list, and will give preference to those who register early. Also, in order to ensure that the largest possible number of cohousing communities are represented, as we fill up we may have to limit the number of persons attending from any one community. Regarding accommodation, no guest-rooms are available at Boston-area cohousing communities. However, a few members of those communities are kindly agreeing to put participants up in their homes; for more details of this, please contact Peg Blum at pegb [at] cambridgecohousing.org. For information on local hotels, bed and breakfasts etc., visit http://www.cambridge-usa.org/visitors/sleep/ In addition to myself, the planning team for the gathering is: Peg Blum and Norma Wassel (Cambridge Cohousing); Linda Cooper and Jean Hopkins (Burlington VT Cohousing); David Entin (Rocky Hill Cohousing, Northampton MA); and Bob Morrison (of Boxboro MA, not in any community but a cohousing enthusiast). Steve Hecht (New View Cohousing in Acton MA) is serving as the liaison between our planning team and the group organizing the national cohousing conference to be held in the Boston area in summer 2008. If you have any questions, please contact me at John_MacDougall [at] uml.edu(with an underscore between John and MacDougall). We look forward to seeing you at the gathering! Best wishes, Peg Blum for John MacDougall (Cambridge Cohousing) pegb [at] cambridgecohousing.org http://www.cambridgecohousing.org -- Peg Blum 175 Richdale Ave #414 Cambridge, MA 02140-3354 (617) 576-1334
