Hi Anita -

We are car sharing a truck and car of one of the residents of our community. Basically they owned the truck before we formed - but it's a useful vehicle so everyone was using it fairly often. We just have a notebook now and everyone marks their mileage in the truck or car when using it (typically we check in before using it). Then they tally up the mileage every once and a while and we reimburse them federal mileage rate, subtracting any gas we put into the truck.

The thing to look out for here is insurance. Technically everyone in our cohousing group owns a car or motorcycle - so we're all covered by our own insurance, but you may want to make sure that is case or check out how to do that on the up and up.

I think overall ZipCar is cheaper and we have an account there - but nothing beats having the option for a car parked right out front.

We have 9 adults, 2 kids and 3 dogs and we're getting by with 7 cars and one motorcycle currently. A lot less than the average Californian family usually does - but hopefully we'll get even better over time. =)

thx
Scott

Hello from newly formed Newberry Place. Are there any cohousing groups that are
sharing vehicles(cars)? If so, we would like details about how the program was
set up, challenges, compensation, etc.
thanks in advance
