Thanks! (Also for the multiple private emails) I now understand that a MOU is also sometimes labeled a DOU (Document of Understanding). I come from the software world, where we most often used what was called a LOI (Letter of Intent) - as a similar deal-making instrument. In all three cases, this document relates to a potential future agreement/contract. From my own experience, the parties hoping to form a significant agreement generally send some language back-and-forth (hooray for email) to detail some of the basics of what they hope to achieve together. It may or may not specify any terms, but often does speak to how they hope to arrive at mutually agreeable terms. A core goal is that it can be "walked away from" by any party without significant consequences - except for the lost investment the parties made in creating the document.
