Donna and all, As a forming cohousing community in the early stages of construction, this is a very relevant topic for us. In fact, we will be devoting a good part of our next community meeting to discussing this general topic together. Thus, our community tends to meet your 'presumptions', Donna. We probably will be discussing what the economic environment means for us as individuals and as a community. That might mean our general fears and also our concerns around selling our existing homes or getting a mortgage so that we can purchase our unit in our community. How can we support each other as a community? What might be the impact on our community from the individual situations of our current members? What might be the impact on our community in trying to bring in new members? Could this be a boon? Do we need to adjust our membership/marketing strategy? Etc. Wanted to offer up some specific thoughts that have come up for us in planning this topic as a possible representation for our particular situation. And note that since we are in Portland, we have not been affected by the situation as much as many areas. In fact, our neighborhood is still appreciating in property value and people are still moving here steadily. And it is still a concern for us. Thank you for bringing this topic to our community. And our community continues to flourish throughout the city offering food and other support to community members in need." -----Original Message----- From: Donna Freiermuth [mailto:editor [at] cohousing.org] Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2008 6:27 PM To: cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org Subject: Re: [C-L]_ A Conversation on the Economic Crisis: How To Do It? Craig, I don't think the conversation would focus on creating new cohousing. Instead, I wonder if it would be helpful to imagine the broadest scope and then decide if it's too broad to approach in one conversation. I'm being presumptuous but I imagine that those feeling the most uncertainty right now include . people trying to sell units in any kind of cohousing (from brand new to existing retrofits) and that includes foreclosures; . forming groups at every stage, as well as . cohousing professionals. Another tack during this planning stage could be to invite those interested to pose questions they would like the panel to address. That could define the scope as well. donna > Donna - and others, > > What seems implied by the list of leaders so far, is that this > conversation may be focused on creating new cohousing?
