This turned out to be a fabulous way to get kids involved. We didn't do it as a community but my two granddaughters had maps and loved it. The four and six year olds who fell asleep, woke up the next morning and finished their map the first thing. They had been talking about their maps for days -- where they were, ensuring they had their blue and red markers, etc.

They went with their mother to vote and got stickers. It was very important to them. Whenever someone says that Obama was elected, she says "Elected is a fancy word for won."

Next election year, I'm going to suggest that we allow the kids to stay up in the CH and do their maps, and skip school the next day if necessary. Once every 4 years isn't too much to ask.

The maps were a great focus of discussion for why states voted this way or that and what the candidates represent.

Having children around also helps adults be more balanced in their comments.
