At RoseWind Cohousing (Port Townsend WA) we do just like Sharingwood: alcohol is not provided by the community per se. Either BYO or donations (on the rare occasion of a big summer party with a keg). Not only does this keep those who disapprove of alcohol from having to share the cost, but it might be of some legal use, if the alcohol furnished contributed to an accident. Not sure about that.

We also have a policy that (of course) alcohol is only for those of age, but also we never leave alcohol in the common house between meals, lest anyone, like teens, help themselves inappropriately. So if there is beer or wine left at the end of an event or a meal, it always gets sent away with someone.
