Under "cooking and cleaning" various groups noted they did or didn't
sell leftovers from common meals.
Here at RoseWind Cohousing, Port Townsend WA, we've done meals for 10
years and this is what we do with leftovers.
We do our best not to leave them at the Common House, unless clearly labelled (Joe will pick this up Tuesday; Sue will heat this for Thursday potluck) and personally taken responsibility for. Still, there are annoyingly abandoned items left in the fridge from time to time. Mainly, between meals the fridge is home for condiments, stored onions, backstock of oils, not meal foods except "in process" for a next meal.
After a cooked meal, the cooks get first dibs on the leftovers. If they came in within budget, which is usual, then leftovers are available to anyone. We have a deep drawer on the dining room side of the serving counter, in which are containers (yogurt tubs and the like) for the purpose. If something looks valuable, it's polite to check with the cooks, items like chicken or salmon.
If the meal went over its budget, that falls on the cooks, and they may announce that leftovers are for sale. Honor system. "Pete, I'm taking $2 worth." and he debits my account and credits the cooks. That's worked fine for us.
