At RoseWind Cohousing, Port Townsend WA (long built), many of our
homes are on a hillside, so daylight basement spaces are common. ADUs
(accessory dwelling units, in city parlance) are legal in our town,
and in our community. So a number of lower levels, and other such
spaces, have been built as ADUs. Presently, I think there are 7. Some
have family members, some have housed caregivers, some are rented to
nearly-invisible tenants, others have tenants who are socially very
much part of the community: my renter downstairs has been here 14
years. One renter/housemate in particular did a whole lot to help
build our common house and some of the homes. Another helps cook.
Having renter/housemates has helped our economic diversity and hasn't been any sort of problem.
Maraiah Lynn Nadeauin a corner of the NW where I'll be able to go out in a sweater most of the winter, and the garden will keep giving us fresh food, and where we have two resales available, around $325K, and potentially a house for a year's lease
check it out.... come visit? the cultural and physical climate is great rain? we have 17" a year, same as San Francisco (a well-kept secret)
