Cohousing-L Mailing List: Area desireability in developing cohousing

Jerry's messages about the demise of Stone's Throw Ecovillage in
Viroqua, Wisconsin got me to wondering about the experience of other
cohousing attempts in rural areas.  Then I got to thinking about our
attempts here in north Minneapolis which I often describe as 'on the
wrong side of the tracks' ie. an area that is less desireabile - lower
income, fewer amenities, lower walking score etc.  Fewer people
interested in cohousing are interested in living here.  But as a
result the cost of land and housing is lower here.

Location desireability probably makes recruiting people for cohousing
easier but to me it seems lower costs should make developement easier.

If you have a commited group that agrees on a less desireable (to the
general population at least) location it can happen.  It might result
in a smaller community.  I can think of one example that this might
describe.

I'm curious about other community's experience on this dimension.


BTW it seems to me that we now have lots of pros that can help
with development.  Do we have comparable help with recruiting people,
particularly an initial core group?  Some (many?) of us dont posees the
skills and personality to be good recruiters.
