There is a growing movement toward this model of cooperative or collective living arrangements. Usually a few friends (3 - 6) get together, pool their financial resources and move into a larger house to age together and support each other along the way. In France this movement was called the Baba Yagas. There is a very informative book called "My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household" written by three single women who were long-time friends. They sold their own homes and bought a large home to share in Philadelphia. The authors are Karen Bush and Louise Machinist.. The book is full of stories, insights, agreements, and little things you wouldn't think of. If you are serious about collective living, this book is a "must read". It will save you a lot of time and give you a head-start on agreement-writing. Another example is where 3 or 4 couples who were friends bought an acreage and built their own houses on it. 'My House Our House' is available on Amazon for around $15. I'm still a big fan of cohousing, but starting out with a bunch of strangers to develop 20+ homes is a bit like trying to herd cats. Maybe starting smaller with people you already know is simpler way to go. We lost our land 4 years ago. Two of us have kept the project on life-support for the last 3 years (we even looked at some nice land last fall), but we are now officially dissolved and our IC webpage is closed. Recently, as an individual, I have purchased a large house with a little house to the side and 2 acres. More and more, it seems right to explore cooperative households, where individuals own a property cooperatively. Does anyone here know anything about such things? A good lawyer to consult?
