Hello Richard, The answer to your question (May non-owners be members of a community’s board of directors?) is very state law specific. For instance, here in Washington only unit owners may be members of a condominium association but non-owners may be on the board of directors as long as the majority of the members are owners. So we have a renter’s representative on our board of directors here at Bellingham Cohousing. So you might want to first take a look at your state’s requirements. Currently, this is limited to lot owners however, we do have, and may continue to have in the future, situations where a permanent resident member living in our community is not a lot owner. We could modify our bylaws to create a new "class" of members who are not lot owners but are still eligible to be a BOD officer. Do any communities have experience with this, or any relevant info to share, or opinions/referrals? Thank you! --- Richard Daley, Secretary, Gainesville Cohousing
