Dear Friends of Earthaven Ecovillage,

We are writing to seek the help of our friends, as we cope with the disastrous
impacts of Hurricane Helene on Earthaven Ecovillage.

The center of Hurricane Helene passed directly over and through Earthaven. It
was forecasted for us to get somewhere between 8 to 10 inches of rain between
Wednesday and Friday. We actually got somewhere around 22 inches in 2 1/2 days.
The resulting flooding was disastrous.

The good news is everyone is well.

The bad news is the creeks swelled and overflowed so much that they took out
many of our roads and destroyed or severely compromised all three of our
bridges, and damaged some of our homes. All of our roads became rushing rapids
overnight, and are unpassable. Additional impacts include damage to our water
systems and off-grid power systems. The ground became so saturated that a lot
of huge trees fell, many of which are blocking the roads both at Earthaven and
throughout the region. Trees and landslides on the roads outside of the
community are preventing access.

As we do, we have come together to mobilize efforts to assure everyone’s health
and safety, restore access, and make sure everyone continues to have what they
need. As of Friday night, September 27, no one at Earthaven has Internet nor
cell phone service nor the ability to leave the village. Major efforts are
being made with chainsaws, tractors and lots of helping hands to clear trees
from the roads so we can gain more access and mobility. Those efforts will
continue today and for as long as it takes to restore and repair things to a
semblance of functionality.

We send our love and compassion to all those experiencing similar difficulty,
challenge, and loss right now. May everyone have the support they need to
navigate these wild and unprecedented times. The storm is the biggest storm
this land has seen in Earthaven’s 30-year lifetime, and is possibly the same
for many others.

We need funds to restore basic access (roads, bridges, and utility systems) to
and within our village. The infrastructure damage is unprecedented and will
take months of work to repair. We humbly ask for your support. Will you please
donate to our GoFundMe and share the link and an appeal on your social media?
Donations to the GoFundMe are tax-deductible through our nonprofit, Culture’s
Edge.

If you are willing and able to support us in a more significant way and you
would like to discuss how, please contact our development director, Amy

Thank you, in advance, for your support, now and in the past.

I just heard from Earthhaven Ecovillage near Asheville NC. Their road and
internet are out. They have posted info on their Facebook page. Diane Leafe

I'm a member of the Rachel Carson EcoVillage, a new cohousing community just
getting ready to break ground outside of Pittsburgh, PA. This was a question I
asked during our Sociocracy class when we were reviewing the RCE Community
Governance Agreement. Our community is committed to governing via Sociocracy,
but (as in most states) Pennsylvania requires us to be a condo association with
a board and officers etc. How, I wondered, would we be able to avoid conflicts
between the condo association board and the idea that Sociocratic groups would
make all the decisions? The answer turned out to be rather brilliant. The way
our condo association is established, the board has exactly 3 members,
identified at the end of the year: the Facilitator of the Coordinating Group,
the Legal and Finance Planning Group Accountig Manager, and the scribe of one
of the other planning groups. Those three meet once per year, and have limited
authority, namely:

To affirm the annual operating budget consented to by LFPG To affirm the
incoming officers (already consented by their individual groups) To affirm all
significant actions taken by the Planning Groups over the course of the
previous year To affirm any changes to the condo association bylaws consented
to by the appropriate planning group.
To affirm insurance policies and tax filings.

That's it. The condo association meetings will be done via consent agendas, so
there's really no discussion involved, just approvals. There are no elections
of board members involved, and I imagine that those board members will change
over fairly randomly as the various groups turn over their leadership positions
at least twice per year (some do it three times a year) and not all at the same
time.

This seems to satisfy both our commitment to Sociocracy and also Pennsylvania
legal requirements for condo associations.

Hope that helps!
