Re: Solar on shared roofs?

Here at Swans Market Cohousing we installed Solar panels on our roofs to cover
Common area electricity costs.  It was a complicated project because we co-own
the roof with a nonprofit that has businesses below us and we needed to replace
our aging roof before they could be installed.  Our share of costs was funded
by a $6000 special assessment per unit.  Worth it because electricity costs
have gone up an average of 5% a year for the last 20 years with no end in
sight.  Now our bill is much lower and we expect to break even in about 7
years.  It was pretty complex doing it as a community; l can’t imagine how it
would work doing it piecemeal family by family.Bonnie FergussonSwans Market

I’m looking for information from established communities who allow
residents to install solar panels on shared roofs. How do you manage
liability? What about lower floor residents?

Thanks!
