Here at Swans Market Cohousing we installed Solar panels on our roofs to cover Common area electricity costs. It was a complicated project because we co-own the roof with a nonprofit that has businesses below us and we needed to replace our aging roof before they could be installed. Our share of costs was funded by a $6000 special assessment per unit. Worth it because electricity costs have gone up an average of 5% a year for the last 20 years with no end in sight. Now our bill is much lower and we expect to break even in about 7 years. It was pretty complex doing it as a community; l can’t imagine how it would work doing it piecemeal family by family.Bonnie FergussonSwans Market CohousingOakland, CA Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPad On Thursday, October 2, 2025, 3:08 PM, Maggi via Cohousing-L <cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org> wrote: I’m looking for information from established communities who allow residents to install solar panels on shared roofs. How do you manage liability? What about lower floor residents? Thanks!
