Here at Mosaic Commons we keep a kitchen equipment sign out sheet on the front 
of the fridge in the common house kitchen.  We've been able to create a culture 
of signing things out when they are borrowed and signing them back in when they 
are returned.  It works well.
It also allows cooks and others to call/email/text whoever has borrowed 
something if they're going to need it.
