At Nevada City Cohousing we have a voluntary ask. Ie “If you feel you may not have been able to contribute the number of work hours we need to help keep up our community, please make a donation to the HOA.” I think providing a buy out option is very helpful, for people who are traveling a lot, are no longer physically capable, or as one of my neighbors once said… “spending every available hour as kids sporting events…”. Making it voluntary means it is not financial hardship on those who may not have the funds, but gives people a way to assuage their guilt for time they were unable to contribute, and gives the HOA some always needed additional funds. Make sure the suggested hourly amount is enough to actually hire someone for non-skilled labor, at least $30/hour.
