Another reason for fiber between buildings is electrical protection. Using copper would increase the hazzard of surge propogation and introduce additional groundloops. This is less an issue with the telephones since they have historicly provided their own power . The primary fault of fiber is the cost of the connections. It takes more than a simple crimp tool to put the ends on it and the optical/electrical interfaces in the equipment is also more expensive. Joe
