Thanks and a question about smoking rules for cohousing common houses and outside common areas

Hi all,

Once again, I would like to thank everyone who has answered my cohousing
questions in the past. I have shared the answers with the entire Jackson
Place Cohousing community, and many people have expressed appreciation.

Now we are in the process of developing guidelines for use of our common
house and outside common property. I have been asked to inquire about what
smoking rules other communities have or have avoided having for cohousing
common houses and outside common areas.

I searched the archives and found only a few brief references to no-smoking
rules in the common house--but we would like to know a little more.

None of our current members are smokers, but some of our friends and
relatives are, and visitors from the surrounding neighborhood might be too.
We are looking for information about specific smoking rules in common
houses: do any communities allow smoking in any part of their common houses
at any times? How is this working?

We also would like to know what rules other communities have about people
smoking outside in common areas owned by the cohousing community: do any
groups have a designated place that guests or others can smoke without
leaving the cohousing property? What about guests who have smoking cravings
when it is raining?

What if a member doesn't feel comfortable about allowing smoking in her or
his home, but also feels uncomfortable about asking a guest to entirely
leave the community property? What arrangements can be made for something in
between, without imposing on other members? How do other communities handle
this kind of thing?

Are there communities that have rules against all smoking inside and
outside, except in individual homes? How is this working?

Whatever else you can tell us on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for past help, and thanks in advance for any help with this
issue.
