We failed to take into account what the fire chief might tell us during development (why was that? don't know) and as a result had quite a bit of plan redrawing to do. A good relationship with the local chief ended up being important, as he walked through the site and saw what really had to be done, apart from the adversarial directives that seemed to develop without personal contact. (another lesson in why someone who can handle relationships during development was important). Of course we had to get smoke detectors in our houses. We do not have sprinklers or smoke detectors in our common house. We did have to make it so a fire truck could drive up our plaza and reach our upper units. Does another local fire dept. have the equipment? Would it really be needed for your devel? etc. Good luck tonite. What has been the experience of other cohousing communities (in particular multi-family and very closely clustered) with issues like these? I?ve looked through the archives & found little on fire regulations & cohousing, & thought maybe some people on the list had personal experience they?d be willing to post (today, if possible, so we can use it in our discussions tonight). Thanks in advance.
