In my feminist work, I've learned that it is a trait of a dominant group to assume, quite innocently, that everyone has the same needs, priorities, holidays, etc. that they do. You know that a group is diverse and/or conscious of diversity when this assumption is not made. In our cohousing group, we have so many people from minority religions that we have often found Sunday morning to be a convenient meeting time. We were each a bit surprised, I think, to find that everyone else was also available at the one generally accepted "taboo time for meetings" in American culture. :-) You never know until you ask. We also enjoy sharing our customs with each other at holiday time -- last year we had a party on the Winter Solstice at which we ate Sun Bread and sang Jewish songs as well as Christmas carols. As far as holidays are concerned, we find the more, the merrier! _______________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list Cohousing-L [at] cohousing.org Unsubscribe and other info: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L
