The contractor is estimating $100 a square foot and hoping to treat the unfinished attic space like garage space which is usually not included in square footage estimates. If we were building just one floor the contractor thinks he could bring the homes in at $90 a square foot so extra $10 will help cover the cost of the "attic" areas. These prices do not include any extras like hard wood floors or upgraded counter tops but we will be able to use carpet from recycled PET pop bottles, FSC certified wood, trex or other recycled content decking, and low VOC paint. I should mention that the idea for this strategy came from the Grow House developed by McGill University in the early nineties.
