While demographics for each community is different, a large number of cohousing communties suffer from the "too many single old women" problem. The reasons vary: Cohousing provides a very supportive place for single parents, which tend to be single women more than single men. In general, women's initial reaction to cohousing is much more open and accepting while men take some time to warm up to the idea. Women tend to outlive men. Men tend to re-marry more than women. Cohousing attracts a bit more of the "alternative types", people who want to slow their lives, work from home, live in a more sustainable way in a community which makes it hard for "wear a suit, work 80 hours" type "typical" men to make the transition to cohousing compared to "homemaker" type women. These are all generalizations and tendencies, but they start adding up and you end up with more single women in cohousing. Still, this is just a trend, you can still find a cohousing with lot of single men if you keep looking :-) Yusuf On Feb 7, 2008 2:17 AM, Jane L <jmvll [at] verizon.net> wrote: > > I just went to my first meeting of a cohousing group on Saturday; I was > favorably impressed by much, but could not help but notice that there were a > number of what appeared to be single women in the group, and no single men.
