I believe when I looked it up wood pellets produce about 4% of the particulate matter as a fireplace. I've seen references to fireplace particulates being about equivalent to second hand cigarette smoke. Wood stoves and pellet stoves both are much more efficient in their burning than fireplaces and so produce much less particulates, athough pellets are more efficient than wood stoves. A fireplace is not a heat source. You will lose heat as it is draw out of the room. I am quite allergic to wood particulates (and to the mold that grows in the firewood, as well). Because of that Mosaic put in a gas fireplace. I like having it, but we've had to make a cover for the fireplace when its not in use in the winter because it makes the room so cold. Personally it is my view that my allergies don't make it so that individual homeowners cannot have heat methods that produce particulates...and thus they can have stoves if they want them. I certainly can tell when they are using them, and if I am already sick I wouldn't visit people who have wood stoves (which includes my parents and brother who both heat with wood stoves). (I also am allergic to plants that produce pollen, which is, essentially, all of them. I just don't think that is a problem that can be solved. I also can't visit friends who have cats.)
