Re Investment of Reserves: Here at Nevada City Cohousing, we’ve never been able to get the community to be willing to take some risks to “better” invest our reserve savings so we make any interest. The problem with not finding a way to invest (socially responsible, of course) is that we are losing money every year to inflation as construction cost goes up more than we are getting interest on our savings. I think we are typical, in that most communities probably don’t invest their reserve funds or savings to 1) make interest, and/or 2) at least put them to work for some good cause. If we treated our retirement savings the way we treat our reserve fund savings, we would greatly reduce what we have to retire on. In order for a community do to that you would need consistent leadership on this issue that the community would trust. Those who tried to get us to consider this some years back got discouraged because the community was so conservative…they’ve not tried again since.
