Hello all —

Our neighbors have just posted a classified ad on the CohoUS website with
details about the sale of their home.

http://cohousing.org/node/4903

I’m underscoring this sale here because this home is one of only three large 4
BR homes in our community. Great for families or, if you enjoy shared house
living, it’s a great group house.

While the CohoUS ad focuses on the many physical attributes of the house and
the community I’d like to add that as a 17+ years old community we have trod
the path that many of our sister communities have trod. Want to know something
about who we are? Check out our really cool website. All our policies,
guidelines, governing documents, etc. are available for everyone to peruse.
You will see we’ve managed a good number of policies from Common House use to
pets to guest rooms. And while I”m not such a fan of policies for policies
sake the ones we have woven give a pretty good insight into how we work
together and how we live together.

We do have FUN! Even our workdays are fun! Workdays start w/ coffee and
goodies. Someone always prepares a yummy lunch. Afterwards, we get a report
on the work accomplished and by whom including work done by kids. It’s a
satisfying end to a work day!

Now that BBQ season is upon us … we BBQ a LOT! We have some grill meisters
here who love playing w/ fire and cooking good food. Speaking of food … we
have one sit down meal a week on Mondays called Soup n’ Simple. Thursday it’s
a kids meal well attended by adults because the menu is always comfort foods:
Mac n’ Cheese, Sloppy Joes, hot dogs, pasta, grill cheese sandwiches, etc.,
etc., etc. Somehow the addition of a big green salad scoots it just under the
balanced diet pyramid. You know … protein, carb, fat, and green veggies …

We have a book club well-attended by adults who seem bent on reading really
serious mind-expanding works. (I just do drugs …) We also have a Women’s Tea,
movie nights, TV sporting events a.k.a World Cup Soccer, Wimbledon tennis,
Super Bowl (for the ads, of course!) One group watched all of the Outlander
series. Another watched Downton Abbey. And some of us watch DVDs of The Red
Green Show (it’s an acquired taste.)

The kids got a new 2.5 story fort this year. It’s quite an architectural
wonder. The smaller kids are getting a new climbing/play structure. The older
teens have a room with a Wii, a TV and lots of games to play.

Too idyllic?

We have our squabbles. Our consensus process is often long.

Someone leaves dirty dishes in the sink or eats someone’s food in the CH
refrigerator.

Someone parks in one of the three or four parking places we share without
reserving it on the website calendar.

We mourn the loss of members who die too soon.

We celebrate the arrival of new ones — babies and seniors alike.

If you’re looking for a built community in the nation’s capitol … please
consider Takoma Village.

And if the above is not enough to persuade you … Sharon Villines lives here!

:-)
