We have the small slots also — a bit larger, maybe 3 inches high. And it would 
be nicer to have more space. In some communities households have real cubbies 
where they can leave indoor slippers, dinner plates, coffee mug, an extra 
sweater, etc. 

When we have things to leave for each other we tend to put them on the kitchen 
counter with a note if they don’t fit in the slot.
