Elderberry Cohousing is a small (18 homes) in a very rural technology desert. No cellphone coverage and barely usable internet. Less than half our members receive texts through Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones. Those that do are on an Urgent Notification group. But almost all residents respond to "urgent" emails. All homes surround and face our common house, which has a large and very loud bell mounted outside the entrance. We haven't had to put it to the test, but if someone rang that bell loudly for an extended period of time, I'm pretty sure everyone would come out and see what the ruckus was all about.
