I am happy to share our experience advertising Sunnyside Village Cohousing in Marysville, Washington, just north of Seattle. The first time we were a sponsor of public radio in Seattle (three years ago) we got a lot of responses which was exciting. We have been a public radio sponsor in the Seattle area several more times (a month or two each time), never with quite the same response as the first time but we still feel it’s a good demographic for cohousing. We did try public radio in Portland and San Francisco with no response and do not think that was worth our money (but you never know, do you?). Is public radio expensive? Well, it’s part of our budget - we feel it’s expensive to not get the word out because if we don’t sell our units then we don’t have a community, so it’s just part of building our community. We have listed (for free) in the National Cohousing Association Directory, and have been a Community Launch partner since the beginning of that program. We appreciate the support, guidance and all the benefits from the association and recommend it. We are also listed in the FIC (Foundation For Intentional Communities) and NICA (Northwest Intentional Communities) directories and recommend them. We have also had a classified ad in the Unitarian Universalist World quarterly magazine for about 4 years. It doesn’t bring us a huge amount of business but doesn’t cost much and we feel it’s worth the money. Several people recently told us they first heard of us through UU World. (Interesting note: the four years ago we were listed under “Housing” but since then UU World has added a specific classified section called “Cohousing”). The place most I highly recommend is google ads. That’s what puts your name on the top of the list when someone googles “cohousing in (your area).” When we ask interested people how they heard of us, the two places they are most likely to tell us are the cohousing directory and “I don’t know I just was googling it…” We think that means they could have heard our ad on public radio which put the thought in their mind, and then googled it and our google ad gave them the information. We recently paid a consultant to get us more targeted with who sees our ads and the reduction in the amount we are paying google has paid for his work. (Happy to give you his name if you want someone in Everett, Washington). We have a FaceBook page that we post pictures and events on but don’t have a Twitter account - sorry - X - because we haven’t gotten around to it. We’re working on Instagram. We’re working on ads on FaceBook. We encourage our members who have FaceBook or Instagram Accounts to promote us. Because we are really wanting to have more families and children in our community we have just recently begun advertising in Seattle’s Child and Parent Map. We can see an increase in the number of hits our website has gotten to correlate with these ads. We have a weekly virtual Introductory meeting on Zoom and our advertising and website are focused to move people in that direction. By spending only an hour a week we can catch interested people when they’re thinking of it (rather than wait a month). We like this approach. Once a person attends our Introductory meeting then they get links to attend other meetings and events that will help them get to know us. I hope this helps someone!
