On Sundays in September, starting September 1st, I'm offering a
five-week live online class on working effectively with three kinds of
conflict that can occur in cohousing. I see these as (1) Interpersonal
conflict, often resolved with good communication skills like NVC; (2)
"Structural Conflict," described in my book Creating a Life Together;
and (3) what I call "Especially Challenging Behaviors" in my
Communities magazine series on this topic. (You can see the first
seven articles at gen-us.net/DLC)

In my experience, each kind of conflict requires a different way to
resolve it--not just the empathetic listening, good communication
skills, or mediation with an outside communities consultant that can
work well to resolve interpersonal conflict. Structural conflict and
especially challenging behaviors also trigger interpersonal conflict
as well, which can make it challenging to figure out what to do.

The five-week course of 2.5-hour classes starts Sunday, Sept 1, 10am
-12:30pm Pacific Time, 1:00pm -3:30pm Eastern Time. It includes slide
show presentations, practice exercises, handouts and slide decks, and
plenty of time for Q&A. It's $185-$250 sliding scale, and a discount
for BIPOC.

My approach to community conflict is quite different from that of most
cohousing consultants, who in my experience tend to address all
conflict through the lense of interpersonal conflict. Unfortunately
this often doesn't work too well with the other two kinds.

The course is designed for people who have felt confused, baffled, or
even hopeless about ongoing conflict in their group and seek grounded,
field-tested solutions. There _are_ things individuals and communities
can do!
