Disaster prep
Daybreak Cohousing in Portland OR has had an active Emergency Prep team for
most of our 17 years of existence. The focus has been on: both
individuals and the community increasing the amount of water saved in case
of earthquake or other disaster; encouraging residents to have their own
supply of emergency food; having training days, knowing how to prepare and
how to our supplies; First Aid training, e.g. Stop the Bleed, Narcan, AED;
educating about what to do in the event of toxic air (earthquake or railway
accident;) purchasing and maintaining supplies for the community from an
annual budget or special project fund: AED, solar power stations, Narcan,
first aid supplies, propane, camp stoves, some shelf stable food (oats,
lentils, eg.). We have other events: water relays for emptying and
refilling our 50 gallon water barrels, National Oatmeal Day with outside
cooking of oatmeal, Stone Soup community meals; speakers from our county
bureau.
