One thing you might look at is "A Pattern Language", by Christopher Alexander et al (Oxford University Press, New York, 1977). It is a very ambitious attempt to offer advice on building at all scales - from how to lay out cities down to what to hang on the walls of your house. It has a lot of very inspiring ideas though, and some of the ones in the middle scale apply to cohousing.
