The most immediate medication for those suffering these kinds of
severe symptoms of information overload disease is to send email to  
listserv [at] uci.com (*not* cohousing-l) with a line in the body of the  
message which says

set cohousing-l mail digest

Then:
        your message is not sent back to you.New messages are not
        sent to you as they arrive, but are accumulated into digests 
        that are periodically sent to you.

Then you can delete them unread in big batches instead of one at a  
time!

(I'm afraid that ultimately the prognosis for this disease is  
hopeless though.  I'm on one list (firewalls) in which I switched to  
digest mode but I get 5 or 10 digests a day, each containing 20  
messages or so.)
