Peter Calthorpe co-authored _Sustainable Communities_ which was published
by the Sierra Club in 1986.  He has designed a number of housing projects,
including, I think, the master plan for a "new community" south of
Sacramento, CA (the state capital and an urban region with a population 
that is approaching 2 million).
