Harry - I'm really surprised you don't know of Peter Calthorpe. He is an architect and planner named by Newsweek as one of the top 25 innovators on the cutting edge for his work on redefining the models of urban and suburban growth in America. Some of his books: Sustainable Communities, a Sierra Club book; the Pedestrian Pocket Book; The Next American Metropolis: Ecology, Community and the American Dream. He has some pretty exciting ideas and is widely known which is also exciting. He recently was keynote speaker at a conference I put on here in Sonoma County on Transportation and Land Use. He speaks of mixed use development, reducing the need for cars, building on rail corridors, etc., etc. And on bringing back front porches and putting garages back behind the house; designing communities so kids can get around safely on bikes and not be isolated at home by the TV, etc. He's in the SF Bay Area and I have an address somewhere, I'll look up and email to you. Sending this to the whole list cuz he's an important guy in this field that folks should know about. Marty Roberts, Santa Rosa
