--------------------------------------------------------------- I can't comment on the number of hours of volunteer time the EcoVillage folks are considering asking of their members, but whatever the number of hours decided on, I feel it is really important that no one be able to "buy their way out" of volunteer work completely. It's not that people shouldn't be able to contribute money instead of labor to meet some part of their responsibility, just that a minimum should be set on volunteer time and energy. Of course, the work should be divided in an each-according-to-his/her-ability way, and a rigid time-clock mentality won't work. Of course, the requirements should be flexible to accomodate persons who temporarily cannot do their share. Still, IMHO, no one should be entirely exempt including teenagers, the disabled and the elderly. This too builds community.
