I can't comment on the number of hours of volunteer time the EcoVillage
folks are considering asking of their members, but whatever the number of
hours decided on, I feel it is really important that no one be able to "buy
their way out" of volunteer work completely. It's not that people shouldn't
be able to contribute money instead of labor to meet some part of their
responsibility, just that a minimum should be set on volunteer time and
energy. Of course, the work should be divided in an
each-according-to-his/her-ability way, and a rigid time-clock mentality
won't work. Of course, the requirements should be flexible to accomodate
persons who temporarily cannot do their share. Still, IMHO, no one should be
entirely exempt including teenagers, the disabled and the elderly. This too
builds community.
