I personally appreciate flames in private, not to the list as a whole.  As a 
general concept, if you call people names, send the mail privately.  I've 
gotten some private flames and even held some rather flamatious 
conversations with folks, but all done privately.  Sort of like when my wife 
and I argue, we tend to do it in private, rather in front of the community. 
 The list is a community of sorts and many find name calling offensive.
