Re: Local businesses as alternatives to commuting

Our coho effort is trying to create a "village of electronic cottages"
for exactly this reason -- to reduce transportation, and depend more on
telecommuting resources. We are also planning on being a retreat center,
for environmental science and environmental law education. (Mind you, I
have no idea if this is ever going to actually happen, at the rate things
are happening, which is currently null...).

Our thought is to try to be pretty self-contained, in terms of businesses,
at least eventually.

The first step of that is that I am starting a small business doing
Internet consulting, which I will move to our coho if it ever exists...
Net Prophets Internet Consulting opened business in mid-December! Very
exciting -- I'm working two jobs, and feel more energized than when I was
working one. And I'm leaving my UO faculty position in June...

My office is at home, but I do find that I make about as many trips out.
But at this point, so much of my business is schmoozing customers,
reviewing logo designs, picking up material at printers, attending meetings
and so on. I hope that will change eventually.
