With a little attention to individual needs, email can work pretty well.
If someone in your group has no email or checks it very infrequently,  ask
someone with email to be his or her buddy and take responsibility to convey
important messages by phone.  It might be good for everyone to have an
emergency buddy in case his or her email goes down so he or she can call
the buddy to find out what is happening.  It's also important for the whole
group to know who checks email how often, who can get it only at work, etc.
 This info can be printed on the list that I hope every group has of the
address, phone numbers, fax numbers, and email addresses of all the members. 

IMHO the most important ingredient in this communication game is a
commitment on the part of each group member to be sure he or he is heard by
everyone else, as well as supporting all other members being heard.
