A good way of dealing with affordable housing is to do it on a small scale. For cohousing communities typical below market rate units could be only 2 or 3 mixed in with market rate units of 15 to 30. If this was done on a large scale in small bites, I think the problems with "slums" would be greatly lessened. I would be interested in getting feed back and experience from cohousing communities that have had some experience with development of a mixed income community that included some households at below the market rate either for home ownership or for rental. What money or other incentives are available for a mixed income project to support mixed below market housing? What has been your experience living in such a project?
