We used seniority, based on when each household became a core member. It's pretty much the only thing I can think of that we did based on seniority. For me, it felt at bit weird but somehow the right way (we were #12 of 24 to choose). Before we chose, however, we went through a meeting or two where we discussed some of our individual values re: clutter, noise, and other neighborhood qualities. The first round of choosing was done with about 9 or 10 houses, then 5 or 6 more. Each time a little shuffling around was done to get some balance. The last few houses picked as they joined. We only had one household drop out before construction began and the replacing household was able to build the unit size they wanted.
